Please describe a pair of your favorite work shoes and tell us what sound they make?
I love wearing my Dr. Martens. They are quiet which I like.
CL Note: Photo is not of Christine's quiet docs, but rather, kid Caron's ceramic rendering of her first pair;)
What’s your occupation?
I am an independent book store owner.
CL Must Add: Christine is the owner and smooth-operator of The BookMark Shoppe, a most delightfully cozy book nook in Bayridge, Brooklyn. Not only can you get great reading recommendations, but you can also browse Christine's gorgeous knitted creations, or even take a class.
She and her staff always make me feel so welcome and are much appreciated for all the work they do to match books with readers. if you're local, visit! (and inquire about school visits!) If you're not, they ship anywhere!
What age children do you have?
Son, 22; daughter 15.
What does your child think you do all day? (please ask them and tell us in their own words if you can!)
Sell books, meet celebrities
How do you and your family benefit from your being a working mama?
Since I am a working mom it helps my kids be independent and I am able to pay for their education especially college.
What are some steps (pun intended!) you took that helped make the transition back to work, work for you and your family?
I have always worked and was able to bring the little one to the bookstore when she was born so we were always together.
What is one of the challenges you face as a working mama? How do you navigate this?
Some challenges are missing things that I must rearrange my schedule for: school plays, pick ups etc.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to future working mamas?
For new working mamas, just know its always going to be ok. And you are not the first mom to go back to work, nor will you be the last. Your children will appreciate you and look forward to the time you do get to spend together. Quality over quantity
Thank shoe, Christine, so much for sharing your story and for all your support of books and authors, like this grateful one. I know first hand how busy you are dashing about, so much obliged for taking the time!
P.S. Signed copies of my books may be available at Book Mark Shoppe, just ask!
Mama’s Work Shoes (Abrams) text by Caron Levis, art by Vanessa Brantley Newton
All about the adjustment a toddler makes when her mother returns to work, this humorous picture book takes on a big emotional milestone with a light hand.
Perry knows all of Mama’s shoes. She knows that the zip-zup shoes are for park. She knows that the pat-put shoes are for the rain. And she knows that no-shoes are for bath time and bedtime. But, one morning Mama puts on click-clack shoes, and Perry wonders what these new shoes are for. When Mama drops Perry at Nan’s house, and the click-clack shoes take Mama away for the whole day, Perry decides she hates these shoes! Perry later hides the click-clack shoes . . . and all of Mama’s shoes, just in case. Mama then explains that the click-clack shoes bring her to work in the morning, and they will also bring her home to Perry every single evening—clickety-clack fast!
